Basilisk Lizards: The “Jesus Christ” Reptiles That Run on Water

Basilisk lizards are real reptiles—not mythical monsters—and they’re famous for an ability that looks like they really are mythical lizards from another dimension: they can sprint across the surface of water. That’s why they’re often nicknamed “Jesus Christ lizards.” In this post, we’ll meet the basilisk, learn where it lives, how it survives, and why protecting its habitat matters.


  • What is a basilisk lizard?

    • Basilisks are medium-to-large lizards in the genus Basiliscus, native to Central America and parts of northern South America.

    • They’re part of the iguana family (Iguanidae)

    • Are known for their alert posture, long tails, and (in some species, like the Western Basilisks) impressive crests.


  • Common species you may hear about include:

    • Green basilisk (Basiliscus plumifrons)

    • Brown basilisk (Basiliscus vittatus)

    • Western basilisk (Basiliscus galeritus)


  • Where do basilisks live?

    • Basilisks thrive in warm, humid environments—especially in tropical forests near rivers, streams, and ponds.

    • They spend a lot of time in trees and sometimes shrubs, but they stay close to water because it’s their best escape route. Water is their best escape route because of their unique ability to run on water.


  • How do they run on water?

When a basilisk is startled, it can explode into motion and dash across water for several meters. What happens is that a basilisk's lightweight body and their 'webbed' feet allow them to accelerate and run on water. Their toes have fringed scales that increase surface area, using the 'slap-and-stroke motion'. Each step slaps the water to create a pocket of air, then strokes backward before sinking. Young basilisks can often run farther than adults because they’re lighter.


  • What do basilisks eat? Basilisks are omnivores, meaning they eat both plant and animal matter. Depending on what’s available, they may eat:

    • Insects and other invertebrates

    • Small fish or amphibians

    • Fruits, flowers, and leaves


Behavior and predators Basilisks are mostly active during the day. They’re cautious, quick, and rely on sharp vision to detect danger. Predators can include birds of prey, snakes, and larger mammals. Their main defenses include:

  • Camouflage in leafy vegetation

  • Speed on land

  • Water-running as an emergency escape


Are basilisks endangered? Some basilisk species are currently considered Least Concern by the IUCN, but they still face threats, even threats that affect other animals. Key threats include:

  • Deforestation and habitat fragmentation/destruction

  • Pollution in rivers and streams, such as chemicals, plastic

  • Climate shifts that change rainfall patterns, causing rivers, creeks and streams to flood unpredictably

  • Illegal wildlife trade in some areas

Even when a species isn’t officially listed as endangered, protecting habitat helps prevent future declines and can benefit other species, such as mammals, birds and insects. There are many things you can do to help, like:

  • Picking up trash and cleaning polluted areas

  • Supporting eco-friendly agricultural practices

  • Donating to reptile conservational organizations, such as HonduHerp

  • Territorial - Defends against competition, like other basilisks or non-predators

  • Oviparous - Eggs laid by mother and develop in the eggs

  • Semiaquatic - Can go on land or in water (Spend most of their time near water, but can swim)

  • Polygyny - Males mate with multiple females, while females only mate with one male
